    Game Running Very Slowly

Post by SGT J on Sun May 14, 2017 5:56 pm

    Hello again Lockie, et al.,

I am back after being away for a quite some time. I haven't had any time to play SF, between moving, having my computer destroyed, reloading everything onto a new computer, retiring and my wife having surgery. I hope to have a bit more time in the future.

I reloaded everything onto the new computer but can't get frame rates over 1.50 fps.

The computer is: Win10 i7 2.71 GHz with 32 GB RAM and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 video card.

Both starter and shell are patched using the 4 GB patch
    Use Desktop Resolution is unchecked
No Video Mode Restriction and Enable Hardware Acceleration are both checked

    The mods installed are:
    SSM 2.2
    STA 2.0
    STA_GMP_1.45
    STA_GMP_2.37
    STA_GMP_3.32
    u02f_DecUpd_2015
    u1_NovUpd_2015
    v09_fix_widescreen_v1.04_SepUpd_2015
    m17a_hedgerows_m4a1

I obviously have missed something to cause it to run so slowly, but I can't figure out what it is.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Hi, SGT J
Sometimes it happens. This is because of the game engine bug, tanks bumped into each other and caused a slow mo.

    The mods installed are:
    SSM 2.2
    STA 2.0
    ...
I recommend u to update the mods. See the order installation here:

    Thanks for the information. Its never as easy as one hopes though. Those tanks just keep bumping into each other and slowing things down. :{

I didn't have the password for a few of the files, STA 2.3 for instance, so I used the STA 2.0. The order looked a little different from what I remembered, but that was a while ago.

    The mods installed are:
    SSM 2.42
    STA_GMP_1.47
    STA_GMP_2.37
    STA_GMP_3.32
    STA 2.0
    v09_fix_widescreen_v1.04_SepUpd_2015
    u1_NovUpd_2015
    u02f_DecUpd_2015
    v05_No_default_music_v.1.4
    m17a_hedgerows_m4a1

Do I have the order all messed up and/or do I need some of the other files perhaps?

    Thanks for the help.

I also get these slowdowns despite having a GTX 1060 graphic card with 6 gbs of gddr5 vram. They are caused by the game which lacks the ability to use all the cores of your processor. Sometime sound can also create a bug which causes you game to slow down dramatically.

Download and install Park Control free which allows you to ensure that a game or program uses all your processor's cores and stop a program form parking cores. Here's the link:

    https://bitsum.com/parkcontrol/

You'll find explanations on how to use the program. Also use the game mode that came with the recent Microsoft Creators update. It help shutting down unnecessary programs when gaming.

Since you are using a desktop and I suspect your cpu doe snot have intel discrete or integrated graphics you should not have a problem with games defaulting to intel graphics rather than Nvidia's. Nevertheless you can tweak your game through Nvidia control panel and ensure that it's the Nvidia';s gpu which you game is using.

Lockie -- things are confusing. Thank you for the passwords. I downloaded the remaining files and installed them following this example:
    Installation:
Here's a video tutorial how to install STA mod. Created by Geoweb35
    1. SSM 2.42 (Steel Sound Mod)
    2. GMP1.x (optional)
    3. GMP2.x (optional)
    4. GMP3.x (optional)
    5. STA 2.3, includes MarUpd 2017 and all previous updates.
    6. 4Gb patch use more than 2Gb memory. Works only with WIN 7,8,10. Details
    7. v.12 fix widscreen(16:9) STA2.3(enables aspect 16:9, resolution 1920x1080)
    8. Quick fix v.2.2, March Update 2017. It fixes some minor bugs.
    9. Cockpit T-34/85 v.1.1, STA2.3 (optional)
    10. Any weather mod (optional)

The only differences are that I ran the 4GB patch on the starter and shell files, not installing it as a mod and I didn't add the cockpit T-34 so my installed mods look like this:

    1. SSM 2.42
    2. GMP1.47
    3. GMP2.37
    4. GMP3.32
    5. STA 2.3
    6. v.12 fix widscreen(16:9)
    7. Quick fix v.2.2, March Update 2017.
    8. v05_No_default_music_v.1.4

The game is still giving about .63 fps.

I installed ParkControl as frinik suggested, but it didn't seem to start, despite several attempts. Maybe I was trying to use it incorrectly.
I seem to remember using a program a while back to make sure my computer was using more than just one core, but I cannot remember what it was. I thought it was something I already had installed, like NVIDIA Inspector or NVIDIA control panel. I don't think it was ParkControl, but I really don't remember.

Any ideas where to go from here?

Have you checked/scanned your pc for malware, viruses ??? What other games do you play and how are they running?

This is not normal. As for Park Control all you need to do is click on the .exe file to start it....

One last possibility if you other games run well , there are no viruses on your pc is that your Steel Fury game is corrupted or missing a file...

Bummer. I run Steel Beasts with no issues... unless I try to run it on the external monitor, but that's a whole other issue. CMANO, KSP, and X-Plane all run fine as well.

I should have no malware, as I typically only connect that computer to the Internet in order to download software and virus scanner updates or to briefly connect to Steam to update those games. I'm even doing this on my other computer (Mac) and download the needed files and then sneaker-net them onto the gaming computer.

I guess I'll uninstall SF completely and start over, redownloading it.

That sounds like sound advice. Believe me with the rig that you have you should play stock missions at 60 fps and even intensive missions at leats with 45 fps. I used to play the game with a 2009 Toshiba satellite with a 2ghz Celeron processor and an old ATI Radeon HD3650 gpu with 512mb of ddr 2 vram with 15 to 25 fps.

OK.... redownloaded. I also installed the STA 2.3 above the GMPs, like I remember the advice being a while ago. It ran with good fps, something around 45. I looked at options and found Use Desktop Resolution checked, so I unchecked it. For some reason I was then getting the painfully slow frame rate again. Needless to say, I'll run it with Use Desktop Resolution checked as it seems to be working for me.

One thing I did experience yesterday was the turret constantly rotating to the left and the gun tube dropping. I had to provide inputs to the right just to keep it pointing to the front of the tank. I haven't tried it again today yet to see if it was a one off anomaly. Has this happened to anyone else? I'll advise if it continues to plague me.

    Thank you for the help!

By unchecking the Use the Desktop Resolution box you are essentially turning off V sync in your game. This is fine for low end pcs and laptops as it helps them gain precious more fps at the expense of the game not looking as pretty. But for powerful rigs like yours it's detrimental. Turning it on will actually improve performance. It does the same for me too.

OK, good to know. I recognize that it's almost impossible to give instructions that will work for every computer in every circumstance.

Happily, the rotating turret problem was just an anomaly and everything is working well now.

    Thanks for all the help.
