Hello from a newbie (issue "insufficient memory")

Post by Flyby on Mon Jan 09, 2017 7:48 pm

    Hi all,
Flyby here. I've come here to learn about tank simulations, and your opinions regarding the best WW2 armor simulation to be found in 2016. From what little I've been able to glean (from the internet of things) I'm leaning towards an armor simulation that has seen some quality fan-based mods. Multiplayer as a sim option is very welcome. I suppose there is online team play.
I currently fly online within (and outside) the Air Combat Group. I own several other combat flight sims to support the small community. I fly those at times, but the ACG has my attention.
Thanks to You Tube, I've seen videos of various tank simulations. Steel Fury seems to gather a lot of respect. In viewing one video I found this site. So here I am, wanting to see if this sort of simulation is for me.
A question: Is there a Balkans campaign mod  for SF?
    thank you all,

    Welcome.
SF is single player only. For MP, Steel Beasts would probably be the best, although expensive and dated graphics.

SF is old but the mod community has kept it alive and new.
It's appeal to me has always been the atmosphere or the feel of it. It just feels gritty and smoky and confusing, just like I imagine WW2 tank combat to have been.

A better simulator, IMO, is SABOW Steel Armor Blaze of War. It's made by the same company as SF, Graviteam. It's a bit newer and playable tanks are limited to 2 models, M60 and T65.

    Hello Tanker,
Thanks for replying. I've looked at Steel beasts, and SABOW, but my main interests are in the huge tank battles of WW2. The appeal to me is similar to your own in that regard. Of course I like multiplayer squad life too. Can't have everything, i guess. WW@_T34 v Tiger is of interest to me as well, except it's not for sale anywhere I know of, and the free-download sites have a dangerous feel to them; I've tried several, and been hazardously redirect to site where I could not back out. So, Steel Fury as a single-player alternative.
    thank you,

One more thing (before I purchase the sim); how to proceed with mods? Is the STA1.2 addon an exclusive pathway? I see on Graviteams's page there are several Tactics type games (Mius Front for example). Those are not necessarily first-person simulations like Steel Fury. Is that Correct? To be clear, I want to be involved from the crew level (think slug fests), and not necessarily from the bird's-eye General's level. Beyond that, maybe added historical campaigns with new content? Is my thinking in line with Steel Fury/STA?
    thanks again,

Nevermind. I think Steel Fury and STA fit the bill for me.

    Hi, Flyby
Welcome on a tank board!  happy
Flyby wrote:One more thing, how to proceed with mods? Is the STA1.2 addon an exclusive pathway?
STA1.2 is more relaible and tested mod, Install according to the recommended order. STA2.2 has new Campaigns and vehicles. STA3.1 is more advanced, but it is still needs to be adjusted.

I see on Graviteams's page there are several Tactics type games (Mius Front for example).
It is a pure tactics games.

I want to be involved from the crew level, and not necessarily from the bird's-eye General's level.
Then SF it is a right choice. And u've ability to get bird's-eye camera also.

Beyond that, maybe added historical campaigns with new content?
In a way yes. There are three default Campaigns based on the real activity. Also here's Campaign for Pz.III/J and Campaign for Tiger, Grossdeutschland, 1943. As a fun content STA presented Campaign "Fury" on the same movie. No mp.
AI is quite acceptable as for the 10 years old game.

lockie, I am much obliged for your reply and input. I have downloaded the sim and am now tinkering with it. I've run into a video issue where I get a warning about insufficient ram. I had set the compatibility to Vista. I think I'll change that since I'm running Win 10. Any advice for me?
    thank you,

OK I did some some sniffing around and invaded the conf.ini and changed the resolution there. Now I have access to the game settings. Onward and upward! Smile
I see the JSGME icon (folder) and it has two mods in it: Compass_mod v.02, and Unofficial_patch_SF_V 0.1_eng.
I can use a little guidance on how to proceed to patch the game up to current, if needed, and some nice juicy mods?

Well, life ain't easy in the trenches of modding. St!1.2 is installed, but the 4gb patch is hard to come by. By that I mean I have enrolled at 4shared, but it's confirmation email has not arrived. I even went to my  ISP email server and it's not showing up there,  not to mention no sign of it on my PC email account. I've clicked the resend button four times now, and I have to call no joy.
I'll assume I need the 4gb patch for win10 because the settings I make don't stick, and I get this message about the video card not having enough ram. Any ideas, lockie?
    thank you,

PS I also get redirected to "Sports Addict". When I try to close adds I'm taken to a Citrio Broweser download page.

Mechanic, what to do? I can't control being redirected. It's either to some sports site or some sort of browser, neither of which I want or trust. What did you do to get past these issues?
    thank you,

PS is it OK to just rename the original sound folder rather than delete it?

    hi mechanic,
Am I correct in assuming you are saying I can use the latest SSM (SSM 2.6). I currently have downloaded SSm2.3 and SSM 2.41 (neither of which has been installed).
    Thank you,

I think I've found solution how to get rid off the annoying warning message "insufficient memory". I can't check it out, coz I've win xp. So, would be pleased if u take a part.
    1. U've to open the next file:
    ...Steel Fury - Kharkov 1942\root\programs\k42game.program
    2. Find the entry:
    check_vidmem = true;
    replace on
    check_vidmem = false;
    3. Save. Start the game and see.

    Hi Lockie !

I have tested it in STA 3.1. The check_vidmem option is indeed in the file !
Unfortunately it does not work, the message insufficient memory still appears... Perhaps it would be better to change the text of the message eliminating the part about insufficient memory and indicating that selecting "No video mode restrictions" is recommended for your computer, or something similar... It could be useful !

    What do you think?
