    Pz.III with 37 mm gun

Post by mechanic on Tue Sep 20, 2016 9:30 am

Are there any Pz.III equipped with 37 mm gun?
I played Campaign Barbarossa and it was only Pz.III with a long barrel gun 50 mm.

I think Wehrmacht didn't has any Pz.III equipped with 37mm gun on June 1941. On July 1940 there was made decision to re-equip all  tanks in the current production with a 50mm L42 gun.
    Here's quote from Lentz:

    PANZER TRACTS No.3-2 Panzerkampfwagen III
    Ausf.E, F, G, und H development and production from 1938 to 1941
Created by Thomas L. Jentz and Hilary Louis Doyle

There are no significant external features that differentiate an Ausf.E from a Ausf.F assembled in the same month. Production of the Ausf.E commenced in 1938 and had been completed by the end of 1939. The first Ausf.F was completed in August 1939 and production continued to April/May 1941 because of delays in completing armor components.
In June 1940, a decision was made to get Pz.Kpfw.III with 5 cm Kw.K. L/42 guns into production as quickly as possible by modifying the turrets to mount an external gun mantle, which had been designed for the Ausf.H. Therefore, these delayed Pz.Kpfw.III Ausf.F (completed in assembly plants after July 1940) had modified turrets and a 5 cm Kw.K. L/42 mounted in an external mantle.
Starting in July 1940, the 5 cm Kw.K. L/42 with 5 cm ammunition stowage and a ventilator in the turret roof was introduced. The last Pz.Kpfw.III Ausf.F with a 3.7 cm Kw.K. was completed in July 1940.
