    I think any TANKSIM will never be good until it'll get a feature - Commander observing/recognition.
    In the memoirs of Otto Carius there was ALWAYS mention about recognition, which Carius always did personally (without tank) before battle. Now we've only map and that's all.
    As my point it's possible for devs to implement such feature. All they need it is new hands animations with binocular and ability of moving without tank.

    So the abilty to get out of the tank and take a look at possible targets before moving the tank into position.

    Yes, user should have such ability. Though, I don't know how often user will use mentioned feature, but I'm sure for advanced players it'll be appreciated.

    As I see it the problem with that would be that on foot the player would be quickly killed. I never see the ai before it sees me and if I don't button up at the sound of the first bullet I get quickly killed by being shot while having my head out of the turret. Like in ARMA, the ai in these games is all seeing while it is much harder for the human to see them.

    Wouldn't having a half-track, car, motorcycle or troops under your control plus the "Allow shared View" setting checked, then advancing them via the map would act like recon?
