    Individual Tank Insignia Question

    After seeing the excellent work being done on the Polish Mod and the "Four tank men and a Dog" tank insignia. Was just wondering if it would be possible, to have a individual tank insignia to give a personal touch to your favorite tank or ride in the game?

    Maybe something like a mod or other means with JSGME, that would give the player a way adding into a mission a personal insignia. I know you could add one manually, but is it possible to have a small quick change mod?

    Yeap, it's possible.
    Each tank has a special dummy(chank) on the model, which could be used as a personal insignia.
    U need:
    1. add graphic image to the marks_file, i.e. marks_tac_marks4_c.dds
    2. add new logo description to the file:
    data\k42\loc_rus\levels\LEVELS\spec\markers.engcfg
    For example:

    //my insignia
    my_insignia_01()
    {

    //slot, label 1 (constant), label 2 (number), probability, prefix

    num, 10d, 1, 1, ;
    mark, my_insignia,       , 1.0, ;

    }
    3. add image size of the new insignia to common_res.engcfg
    my_insignia,-0.3,-0.3,tac_marks4,sh_marks,378,875,270,145;
    where
    378,875 - X1,Y1(coordinates of the upper left corner of the image)
    270,145 - size (X1-X2, Y1-Y2)
    4. in ME assign the new insignia to the tank.

    I do not know how to make a tank skin for SF, but would like to give a small project such a a tank insignia a try.

    One more question, are there some links or etc for SF skin tutorial info, to help get a look for what is needed to get a start? Was checking into this and could not find any information on skinning for Steel Fury for a beginner.

    Well it only took today, but figured out how to change my image BMP file into a DDS file.

    Just getting some ideas, but it is a start.  Very Happy



    Using GIMP and had to add a DDS plug in from the GIMP downloads for the DDS files.

    marks_tac_marks6_c.dds
    bump_tac_marks6_bump_c.dds

    but it doesn't work.
    Must it be registered (declared) in any other place?

    In SF markings are not composed as extra local textures on the basic surface, but placed on extra s-class chunks a bit above the surface (what solves the problem of markings visibility).
    So, are bumps obligatory for markings (which generally represent paintings, not bas-reliefs)?
    Why files
    bump_tac_marks*_bump_c.dds
    are not totally "flat"?

    Yes, even more u've ability to adjust it in the tank.cfg file:
    mark, s_mark_rturr_f, , 0.8, 0, 0.020;
    where
    0 - rotating angle
    0.020 - displacement value from the surface
    Unfortunately, displacement doesn't work if polygon surface has none-unified normals.

    Yes, u must provide graphic image with a bump image or there will be glitches. Bumping on the logo/insignia/numbers is presented.

    Glad you liked the test logo and yes, place it in the game if you think it is good enough. Very Happy  

    Have working on a couple other ideas for my logo and also have been getting to know GIMP a little better. Which has been a slow learning curve to date, but have made some progress so far. Laughing

    I had a very small experience with GIMP and I didn't like it at all. I'm pretty sure I'll never have a deal with GIMP.

    The eagle wasn't visible on the tank.
    After renaming both DDS files and common_res.engcfg entry into "marks0" - the eagle properly appeared.

    I see. But I use GIMP and with DDS plug-in can open, edit and save all SF DDSs, except this one. While opening, GIMP reports error "unexpected end of file".
    And markings #5 file is really shorter then others.

    Try XnView.

    Is that editor or viewer only? Can it convert DDSs into other graphics formats?

    I've done several tests and got confirmation: number of markings textures files is limited to 6 (indexes from 0 to 5 only, and no more!).

    XnView is an image organizer and general-purpose file manager used for viewing, converting, organizing and editing raster images, as well as general purpose file management.

    Finished my final "personal insignia logo" design which is based on an old photo of Woofie. Smile

    Using "yellow" lettering for the name logo, as yellow was used for some of the "turret codes" on the US tanks in 44, but might change that to white.  Was also trying to keep with a semi realistic logo for the time. Also have been thinking that the logo should maybe be broken into two parts, the "dog face" for the turret and the name "MAD DOG" for the side of the tank. We'll see.  Smile

    Step #2... So now I need to learn how to "add graphic image to the marks_file, i.e. marks_tac_marks4_c.dds" with GIMP.  study

    Logo looks fine. Now u've to define the coordinates and write them down to common_res.
    Here's coordinates of the left upper corner: 820,855

    The size is: 200,165
    So, we've:
    mad_dog,-0.3,-0.3,tac_marks2,sh_marks,820,855,200,165;

    Everything seems fine except textures. I think u've made mistake with a bump texture. To be sure I need to have a look. Compile all files into simple mode and upload it here. Then we shell see Basketball
