"The Man Who Saved the World."

Post by woofiedog on Thu Sep 17, 2015 12:40 pm

Sept. 26, 1983, when "Stanislav Petrov" made a decision credited by many with averting a nuclear war.

I was simply doing my job, and I was the right person at the right time, that's all.

    http://bigstory.ap.org/article/1d519e7c53f649d7baa23e72b41c1754/russian-who-saved-world-recalls-his-decision-5050

An alarm had gone off that night, signaling the launch of U.S. intercontinental ballistic missiles, and it was up to the 44-year-old lieutenant colonel to determine, and quickly, whether the attack on the Soviet Union was real.

Sorry, I didn't have time to think about whether I would be the one who started World War III," he said. "I had to decide how reliable the information sent by the computer was."

One more person to add to this article.

If you were born before 27 October 1962, Vasili Alexandrovich Arkhipov saved your life.

So as you look up to the blue sky today and take a breath of fresh breath of air, it is because of these two men that any of us are here to remember their faces and their deeds that gave us all just a little more time on this small planet of our's. Neutral

That's a very interesting story! There was another colonel from GRU who informed Kennedy abt. Soviet rockets in Cuba. His name is Oleg Penkovsky. GRU burnt him alive.
