How do I unpack .DDS files?

Post by Technopiper on Sun Aug 30, 2015 11:59 am

I understand that .DDS texture files are packed with 12 levels of resolution. Problem is when I open them with paint.net I only get the top resolution. I edited and saved a .DDS file with no problem, even successfully applied it in game. But I suspect I may need lower resolutions for optimized performance. How do I unpack all 12 levels in .DDS? More importantly, how do I save all of them in the new .DDS? Thanks!

texture "levels" are called mipmaps, its like LoD for textures. You dont need to open them. Mipmaps are nothing you work with yourself. It applies it automatic if you save it with mipmaps during export Very Happy

Thank you for the enlightenment, Donken! Now I have learned something new. Wink
How could I export a .dds file that I created? Say, I created a snow camo for the Sdkfz 232: "techn_sdkfz232_c.dds".

    Here's from topic:

To make BUMP texture u need plugin DDS for the Photoshop.
    www.sendspace.com/file/3fix71
Then open texture i.e. tank T-35a and apply filter DDS, convert, then save as DXT5 format.

It would take me a while to try and digest that, but thank you!

Ok, I think I got it. All I need to do is check "generate mipmap" in Paint.Net's save dialogue. Knowing the correct terminology helps a great deal. Thanks! Very Happy
