    SU-100 "firing port"

Post by lockie on Fri Apr 03, 2015 4:17 pm

I've checked out SU-100 model and there is mistake with "fire port".

According to this photo "fire port" should be placed on the frontal glacis.

This view of an SU-100 shows its bolted mantlet (similar to that of the Jagdpanther), firing port (between the driver's hatch and the roof-mounted MK.IV periscope) and a bolt below each tow hook for adjusting track tension via the idle wheel. Soon after the Soviet SU-100 had been introduced to combat in Hungary and East Prussia in January 1945, the Germans captured a few examples. One was sent off for testing, where the German experts concluded that only the new super-heavy tank 'Maus' being developed would be entirely immune to the Soviet 100mm gun's AP rounds. Recently deployed heavy armour such as the Tiger II was resistant to such projectiles only across its frontal arc.

With this fix SU-100 will get acceptable MG protection, coz now SPG has PPSh and Mk.IV sight device. But I don't know who will shoot? Gunner? But he is busy with gun and targeting. Loader/Commander - are out of area. There is only driver left.

The SU-100 is a fearsome killer. But like all spgs it has a weakness, once its tracks have been shot it's a sitting duck!

Finally, I've equipped SU-100 with PPSh placed on the frontal glacias. For user it'll will be a very hard to hit smth. through this small hole, but at least he has such ability. U've to take a seat as loader to shoot from PPSh.

Here's interesting screen of the SU-100. As u can see it is a cork with a chain, which cover the hole of the gunsight.
