Is there a way to improve mission load times?

Post by kenbb99 on Tue Feb 13, 2018 1:53 am

The game loads to the Main Menu quickly (under 10 seconds) but takes almost a minute and a half to load a mission. I have an SSD, 12 MB of RAM, a 2 GB video card and a reasonably modern CPU. I tried copying the game files to a RAM disk and running from there, but this did not improve the mission load time. It does not appear from Windows Task Manager that the CPU or disk are above 30% while the mission is loading.

I am running STA version 1.2. Any thoughts? Thanks!

What is reasonably modern CPU? For example i5 4670 takes somewhere 15 sec to download the mission.

Your video didn't play, but your post was helpful - it points to the CPU as a potential problem. I have an AMD FX-6300 (six core) which, even though it is five years old, is a lot newer than the original game when I bought it (around 2008, I think).

I set Windows Task Manager to show logical processors for the CPU. CPU 0 went to 100% during mission loading. CPU's 1, 2, and 3 were at around 20%, and CPU's 4 and 5 were idle. It looks like the CPU is the bottleneck for slow mission loading - loading is using just one of the six CPU cores and this core is 'slow'.

I realize at this point there is probably nothing I can do without upgrading hardware. However, any thoughts or suggestions?

    Thanks for your help.

Steel Fury has unfortunately that built in flaw which makes the game unable to used more than one core . It 's a game design problem that we cannot solve without having the original game code to make modifications to it.
